Wyatt dressed hastily and practically ran to the kitchen. What in the hell was he thinking? He should’ve never touched her. Had he learned nothing ten years ago?

He ran a trembling hand over his face and tried to steady his breathing. His body still felt as if it had been electrified. It didn’t help that the sex was the best he’d had in years.

His body stirred, ready for round two.

Wyatt had to get it together before Sally came into the room or he’d find himself straddling her again. He used his rodeo skills to focus his thoughts.

Calm them enough to do what he knew needed to be done. It was sex. Great sex. Mind-blowing sex. But just sex. Nothing between them had changed.

He walked over to the sink and got a glass of water. Wyatt chugged it down as he stared out at the fields. He heard Sally’s soft footsteps a second before she entered the kitchen.

“Wyatt?” Her voice stroked him.

He closed his eyes, silently counted to five, then forced himself to face her. “I think you should get a room in town.”

Her face paled with shock. “What? Why?”

“It’s not safe here.” Wyatt didn’t tell her about what he’d discovered in the barn or his lingering suspicions.

Sally’s hands moved to her hips. “I’m not staying in a motel, when there’s a perfectly good house to sleep in.”

He grit his teeth, until his jaw hurt. “It’s not safe. You nearly died.”

“I’m not going to be driven out of my home.” Her conviction shocked them both. “At least for the time being,” she added hastily.

Had she intended to fix up the ranch and stay?

No, definitely not. She’d always planned to sell the place and never come back. So what had changed? Nothing. As soon as she received word on her promotion, Sally was out of here.

Wanting to go didn’t stop her from craving a repeat performance with Wyatt. If anything, her body was even more ravenous than it had been before.

“Fine!” His face flushed, but his expression remained stoic. “I’ll check the house to make sure it’s safe to stay in, then I’m leaving.” He walked off before she could say another word.

Sally watched Wyatt stalk in and out of the rooms. How had this happened? She hadn’t intended for them to make love. As much as she wanted it to be just sex, Sally had enough experience to know the difference.

Wyatt slammed doors as he worked his way from room to room. They needed to talk about what happened, but every time she thought about broaching the subject she caught a glimpse of Wyatt’s closed off expression and thought better of it.

It took an hour for him to assess the building inside and out. Sally had given up watching him and had finally sat down at the kitchen table to wait. He stopped in front of her, when he was done.

“So what’s the verdict?” she asked.

Wyatt scowled. “It’ll stand, but it needs a lot of work.”

“Are you going to take the job?” Sally asked, even though he’d already turned her down once.
